What is a Fluorescent Lamp?

Using a phosphor coating, fluorescent lamps transform ultraviolet energy into visible light. While these lights used to be commonly associated with harsh overhead lighting in office buildings, they have since become popular for being more energy-efficient than incandescent bulbs.

Are Fluorescent Lamps Good Grow Lights?

Fluorescent light can be successful for starting seedlings and rooting cuttings, but they have little to offer plants in their later stages of growth. Fluorescent lamps provide very little light intensity compared to HID and LED lighting. They are also far less efficient in their conversion of electrical power to lumens of light output. They do emit less heat than HID lamps, but LED grow lights accomplish the same with greater efficiency at light intensity.
